In this guide, I will demonstrate how to change the password on a VPS running the Linux operating system (Ubuntu). The process on other Linux versions is similar to the following steps:

1. Change Password on Linux VPS (VMWare Virtualization)

1.1. Open Boot Menu

First, in the VPS management panel, go to Console -> Select Launch HTML5 Console.
The HTML5 Console window will open.

Launch HTML5 Console

Then, go back to the panel, and under the Action section, select Hard Reboot.

Choose Hard Reboot

In the Console window, when the system begins to reboot, quickly press the Esc key. If successful, the screen will display as follows:

Open Boot Menu

At the Ubuntu line, press the “E” key to edit. Then find the line containing linux.

Press E to Edit

Change the content to rw init=/bin/bash.
Next, press F10 to boot the system.

1.2. Use the passwd Command

Once the system has finished booting, enter the command: passwd root
Then, type the new password.

Command passwd

Note: When entering the password, no characters will be displayed on the screen. This is a security measure during login on Linux systems.
It is recommended to use a strong password that includes uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.

If the password is successfully changed, the message “password updated successfully” will appear.

1.3. Reboot and Login Again

Finally, reboot and try logging into the VPS with the information you just updated.

You can follow along with the tutorial video below:

2. Change Password on Linux VPS (KVM Virtualization)

For TotHost's KVM VPS, users can change the password directly on the control panel via the "Reset Password" button.
